Summer Movies

Summer is when Hollywood breaks out thrills, chills and big bucks in search of a blockbuster.

Nine of the top 10 grossing movies of all time were released between May and August. Summer blockbusters like Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Jurassic Park grace the top 30.

Notice a theme? Summer releases rarely come with Academy Award-winning scripts. Save the drama for fall. Summer is all about action and comedy. From a super-villain in "Despicable Me" to superheros in "Predators" to one woman's journey around the world in "Eat, Pray, Love," there's sure to be a blockbuster in summer 2010 to please everyone.   • Lord of the Flies - (1963 and 1990)
    Prep school boys, stranded on a desert island, make their own rules with frightening results in the 1963 and 1990 adaptations of William Golding's novel.

  • Swiss Family Robison
    A family shipwrecked on an uninhabited island encounter wildlife, pirates and adventure in this 1960 adaptation of Johann David Wyss' novel. A new version, to be released in 2012, is in the works.

  • The Blue Lagoon
    This adventure romance's greatest attribute is its cinematography. The movie follows two shipwrecked youngsters as they grow up alone on a beautiful South Pacific island.

School's Out

Throw responsibility out the window and re-live the freedom of summer.
  • American Graffiti
    Cruise the streets with these high-school seniors before they head off to college in George Lucas' 1973 Award winning classic.
