Back to School Movies

The dog days of summer are over and school is back in session. Over the years, school has been a popular setting for both comedies and dramas. With the intense law-school scenes of The Paper Chase and the toga parties of Animal House at the extremes, school-centered movies have backdrops many of us can relate to.

Some of America's most popular movies are about the high school years. Think you know them? Test your knowledge with the Back to School movies quiz.

Try these links for a few of the best:

Comedies

  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High
An honest portrayal of southern California high school students who enjoy malls, sex and rock 'n' roll. The film is based on real-life adventures chronicled by director writer/director Cameron Crowe.

  • Animal House
Frat-house adventures rule for the Delta House of Faber College in this classic American college comedy.

  • Never Been Kissed
A journalist enrolls in her old high school as part of her research for a story in this romantic comedy.

  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off
In this classic comedy, a popular high school wise guy is determined to have a fabulous day off from school. The dean of students is on his tail.

  • Mean Girls
A high school girl who moves to a Chicago suburb enjoys pranking the popular crowd at her new school by posing as one of them -- until she realizes she became someone she wasn't proud of anymore.

Dramas

  • To Sir, With Love
Sidney Poitier plays a reluctant teacher in a tough London school in this acclaimed 1967 film.

  • School Ties
A Jewish boy goes to an elite prep school in the 1950s and hides his religion until a jealous bigot forces it out. School Ties was a big break for many young actors, including Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon and Chris O'Donnell.

  • The Breakfast Club
When five kids are forced to spend a Saturday detention in school, they find they have more in common than they realized. A Brat Pack classic.

  • Dead Poet's Society
A beautiful film in which English professor John Keating inspires his students to love poetry and seize the day.
